IN A NUTSHELL

Bard is a selective, private, liberal arts college that offers a scholarly and intellectually vibrant atmosphere emphasizing interdisciplinary study and understanding multiple perspectives different from their own. Students engage in discussions, debates, and collaborative projects both inside and outside the classroom.

Bard College's mission emphasizes a commitment to rigorous academics, intellectual inquiry, civic engagement, and the arts. The college aims to provide a transformative education that empowers students to think critically, creatively, and ethically, while also encouraging them to engage meaningfully with their communities and the world at large.

Renowned for its picturesque campus, Bard is situated in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. The campus spans over 1,000 acres of beautiful Hudson Valley landscape, offering a mix of historic and modern architecture, and boasts several historic buildings, including the iconic Blithewood Mansion, which serves as the home of the Levy Economics Institute.

ACADEMICS

Unique to Bard, and in line with their mission, the Senior Project is a culmination of a student's undergraduate education and one of the highlights of a Bard undergraduate education. This significant independent research or creative project allows students to delve deeply into a topic of their choice, working closely with a faculty advisor who provides guidance, feedback, and support. This capstone experience demonstrates their mastery of their chosen field of study.

Bard College is committed to fostering a sense of civic responsibility and social justice among its students. The college encourages active participation in community service, volunteerism, and advocacy efforts aimed at addressing pressing social, political, and environmental issues.

STUDENT LIFE

Bard College provides numerous communal spaces for students to gather, study, and socialize. These include libraries, cafes, lounges, and outdoor seating areas, and are home to the Charles P. Stevenson Jr. Library, which serves as the main library on campus. The Stevenson Library is housed in a modern, architecturally striking building designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier. The building features a sleek, minimalist design with ample natural light and open spaces.

The campus offers cultural and recreational facilities, including the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, which hosts theatrical performances, concerts, and other cultural events. Additionally, there are sports facilities, art galleries, and museums on campus.

Bard College students have the opportunity to watch concerts on campus at various venues, with the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts being the primary location for larger concerts and performances. Commonly known as the Fisher Center, this state-of-the-art facility hosts a wide range of concerts, theatrical performances, dance recitals, and other cultural events throughout the academic year. The Fisher Center includes the Sosnoff Theater, a 900-seat venue renowned for its excellent acoustics and innovative design, as well as the smaller LUMA Theater and the Spiegeltent, an intimate performance space.

Olin Hall is another important venue for concerts and musical performances on the Bard College campus. It is a more intimate space compared to the Fisher Center, with a seating capacity of approximately 200. Olin Hall often hosts chamber music concerts, student recitals, and smaller musical events.
