Exploration
I just read an old issue of Eating Well which spurred a good conversation with my environmentally conscious daughter about what fishing will look like in the future. It turns out that Aquaculture will be essential if we want to continue to eat seafood. I’m not sharing this to talk about fish in our diet but to use it as an example of why we need to expose our kids to more opportunities than what’s directly in front of them. What conversations are you having at your house? How are you expanding your child’s thinking about his or her future? In 8th grade, I asked my daughter what she wanted to be when she grew up and she responded, a teacher or school psychologist. Why those? Because the two women she admired most were her basketball coaches who happened to be the school psychologist and a teacher at her school. We can’t expect kids to make big decisions if we don’t expose them to what the world can offer them especially when they feel time-pressure during the busy fall of senior year.
